Find out more about replacing important documents, or where to go for wellbeing and coronial support if you've been impacted by a disaster.

Replacing important documents

For information about replacing birth certificates, marriage certificates, change of name certificates and driver’s licences, you can contact your nearest service centre using the Service NSW location finder. Service NSW can also help you to replace certificates registered in other Australian states and territories or in New Zealand.

For information about replacing an Australian citizenship certificate that has been lost, destroyed or damaged in a disaster, you can contact the Department of Home Affairs or call the Disaster Response Legal Service NSW on 1800 801 529.

If you have home and contents insurance, you may have cover for replacing certain documents, such as the certificate of title to your property. You should check this with your insurer or call the Disaster Response Legal Service NSW on 1800 801 529 for help.

Coronial

If you have lost a family member as a result of a disaster, such as bushfire or flood, you can get free legal advice from the Legal Aid NSW Coronial Inquest Unit. Solicitors from the unit assist families to communicate with the Coroners Court, obtain information, and make representations. They can also appear as your lawyer at an inquest in certain circumstances.

Families play an important role in the NSW coronial system. They are entitled to a voice, and to answers over the death of a loved one.

The coronial process can be a confusing and daunting one. Even a short conversation with Legal Aid NSW about what to expect can help alleviate your concerns. You can contact the Coronial Inquest Unit via phone on (02) 9219 5156 or (02) 9219 5000.

Wellbeing

Being in a disaster is traumatic. It’s important to ask yourself and your family how you are all feeling. And it’s ok to ask for help and support.

You can receive counselling through your local GP (found via the Healthdirect GP finder) or by calling Lifeline on 13 11 14.
